Calling "ya"-"O" To Dead

In The Name Of Allah Most Gracious Most Merciful
Assalaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatuallahi wa barakatuhu

Calling Prophet With “Ya”-“O” In His Absence

“Ya”-“O” Is called To Those Who Are near And Hearing

The greeting upon entering the graveyard was the practice of our beloved Rasul, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam.
Sahih Muslim HadithHadith 2128 Narrated byBuraydah ibn al-Hasib
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to teach them when they went out to the graveyard. One of the narrators used to say this in the narration transmitted on the authority of AbuBakr: "Peace be upon the inhabitants of the city (i.e. graveyard)". In the hadith transmitted by Zuhayr (the words are):"Peace be upon you, the inhabitants of the city, among the believers, and Muslims, and God willing we shall join you. I beg of Allah peace for us and for you.
*Note:The word, 'you' in the greeting in Arabic is used for Nidaa-e-Qareeb as well as Nidaa-e-Ba'eed (call upon some one/thing near or far). Therefore, even if the souls are far (in A'lam-e-Barzakh) it will be appropriate in Arabic to address them with 'Yaa' as well. And Allah Taala Knows Best.

Near the grave and near the dead body, the deceased can be addressed as “ya”-“o” because the deceased is hearing.
“ya” cannot be said when the person who is called is not near. There is a misconception among Sufi’s who believe that Prophet Muhammad is omnipresent and he is hearing and seeing. That is why when they are in need they call for his help.

The Book Pertaining to Paradise, Its Description, Its Bounties and Its Intimates (Kitab Al-Jannat wa Sifat Na'imiha wa Ahliha)
Muslim :: Book 40 : Hadith 6862 Anas b. Malik reported Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) having said: When the servant is placed in his grave and his companions retrace their steps arid he hears the noise of the footsteps, then two angels come to him and make him sit and say to him: What you have to say about this person (the Holy Prophet)? If he is d believer, lie would say: I bear testimony to the fact that he is a servant of Allali and His Messenger. Then it would be said to him: Look to your seat in the Hell- Fire, for Allah has substituted (the seat of yours) with a seat in Paradise. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: He would be shown both the seats. Qatada said: It was mentioned to us that his grave (the grave of a believer) expands to seventy cubits and is full with verdure until the Day when they would be resurrected.

Book 040, Number 6869:(Sahih Muslim)
Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) let the dead bodies of the unbelievers who fought in Badr (lie unburied) for three days. He then came to them and sat by their side and called them and said: O Abu Jahl b. Hisham, O Umayya b. Khalaf, O Utba b. Rab'ila, O Shaiba b. Rabi'a, have you not found what your Lord had promised with you to be correct? As for me, I have found the promises of my Lord to be (perfectly) correct. Umar listened to the words of Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: Allah's Messenger, how do they listen and respond to you? They are dead and their bodies have decayed. Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, what I am saying to them, even you cannot hear more distinctly than they, but they lack the power to reply. Then'he commanded that they should be buried in the well of Badr.

"The Messenger of Allah spoke to the People (buried) in the Well saying: "Have you found out that what your Lord had promised you is true?" then someone exclaimed: "Are you calling out to the dead!" The Prophet replied: "You do not hear better than they do, except they do not respond." (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 23, Number 452)

Volume 2, Book 23, Number 453(Sahih Bukhari)Narrated 'Aisha:
The Prophet said, "They now realize that what I used to tell them was the truth. "And Allah said, 'Verily! You cannot make the dead to hear (i.e. benefit them, and similarly the disbelievers)(27.80)

Ibn Saâd, at-Tabaqat-ul-kubra (2:299); Alaâ-ud-Din Ali, Kanz-ul-ummal, 15:577 (#42245).
There is no Muslim who invokes blessings upon me (salutes me), but Allah returns to me my soul till I respond to him in return.
Abu Dawood, Sunan, b. of manasik (rituals of hajj), (2: 218 # 2041); Ahmad bin Hambal, Musnad, 2:527.

Hadrat Isa ((رضي الله عنه) will return to this world. Then Hadrat Eisa ((رضي الله عنه) will visit Madinah and the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:
And when he (Isa) will stand beside my grave calling: "O Muhammad!" I will respond to him.
Ibn Hajar Asqalani, al-Matalib-ul-‘aliyah, (4: 23 # 3853).

*Note: It is the duty of every grave visitant to send salaam ,that will be replied by Prophet Muhammad[salla lauhu alaihi wa sallam]

Musnad Imam Abu Hanifa, Bab Ziyarah Qabr an Nabi Salallaho alaihi wasalam
Abu Hanifa An Nafi An Ibn Umar, Qaal: The appropriate way is that you turn towards the grave of Prophet (salallaho alaihi wasalam) coming from
the qibla while having your back towards Qibla, facing directly towards the qabr and say peace be upon you O [ya] Prophet of Allah and his rahmah and barakah.
*Note:Sending peace on Prophet Muhammad salla lahu alaihi wa sallam and mentioning The Rahmat[mercy] and Barakah[blessings]

‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ud says that the holy Prophet cried so bitterly over the martyrdom of his uncle Hamzah in the
battle of Uhud as he had never cried before. He says that he placed his coffin in the direction of qiblah and burst into tears until he started
hiccupping. Then he addressed Hamzah and said:
O Hamzah! O the uncle of the Messenger of Allah! O Allah’s lion! O lion of the Messenger of Allah! O Hamzah! O doer of good deeds! O remover
of troubles! O protector of the radiant face of the Messenger of Allah!

Saying ya near the deceased is allowed

Al-Qur'ân 24:63 (Verbatim Reproduction of Tafsir Ibn Kathir for this ayah)
Saying “YA Muhammad “ Is Forbidden
The Etiquette of addressing the Prophet (SAW)
Ad-Dahhak said, reporting from Ibn 'Abbas: “They used to say 'O Muhammad', or 'O Abu Al-Qasim', but Allah forbade them to do that, as a sign of respect towards His Prophet (SAW), and told them to say, 'O Prophet of Allah', 'O Messenger of Allah'.[Ad-Durr Al-Manthur 6:230]. This was also the view of Mujahid and Sa'id bin Jubayr [At-Tabari 19:230]. Qatadah said: “Allah has commanded that His Prophet (SAW) should be teated with respect and honor [At-Tabari 19:230]. Muqatil said concerning the Ayah: “Make not the calling of the Messenger among you as your calling one of another”.
“When you address him, do not say, 'O Muhammad', or 'O son of Abdullah'; rather honor him and saym,'O Prophet of Allah', or 'O Messenger of Allah'.

“Make not the calling of the Messenger among you as your calling one of another”.
A second view concerning the meaning of the Ayah is that it means 'do not think that if he prays against you it is like when anyone else prays against you, because his prayers will be answered; so beware lest he prays against you and you will be doomed'. Ib Abi Hatim recorded this from Ibn Abbas, Al-Hasan al-Basri and Atiyyah Al-Awfi. And Allah knows best [At-Tabari 19:230]

Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him Was’nt Aware
To make the Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq) Bukhari :: Book 8 :: Volume 76 :: Hadith 578 Narrated 'Abdullah:
The Prophet said, "I am your predecessor at the Lake-Fount." 'Abdullah added: The Prophet said, "I am your predecessor at the Lake-Fount, and some of you will be brought in front of me till I will see them and then they will be taken away from me and I will say, 'O Lord, my companions!' It will be said, 'You do not know what they did after you had left.'
*Note:Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him was’nt aware of the sins his companions, this itself proves he is not omnipresent.

Calling “ya” To The Unseen
Rasul Ullah(salallaho alaihi wasalam) said: "Allah has angels on the earth - other than the [two] record-keepers - who keep a record [even] of the leaves that fall on the ground. Therefore, if one of you is crippled in a deserted land where no-one is in sight, let him cry out: a'înu 'ibad Allâh rahimakum Allah, 'Help, O servants of Allah, may Allah have mercy on you!' Verily he shall be helped, if God wills."

Narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir with a fair chain (according to Ibn Hajar in al-Amali) of sound narrators according to al-Haythami (10:132), al-Bazzar (#3128) - as cited by al-Shawkani in Tuhfa al-Dhakirin (p. 219 p. 155-156) -, and Ibn Abi Shayba (7:103)
Ibn Hajar al asqalani said its chain is fair (isnaduhu hasan) in "al-amali"

Imam Shawkani explains in the same Tuhfa al Dhakirin
"In the hadith (of a`inu) there is evidence that it is permissible to ask help from those one does not see among the servants of God, whether angels or good jinn, and there is nothing wrong in doing it, just as it is permissible for someone to seek the help of human beings if his mount becomes unmanageable or runs loose." Tuhfat al-Dhakirin p. 155-156

*Note:Angels also help Muslims in JIHAD, 8:9. (Remember) when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): "I will help you with a thousand of the angels each behind the other (following one another) in succession."

Muslim Jinns
72:1.Say (O Muhammad SAW): "It has been revealed to me that a group (from three to ten in number) of jinns listened (to this Qur'ân). They said: 'Verily! We have heard a wonderful Recital (this Qur'ân)!
13. 'And indeed when we heard the Guidance (this Qur'ân), we believed therein (Islâmic Monotheism), and whosoever believes in his Lord shall have no fear, either of a decrease in the reward of his good deeds or an increase in punishment for his sins.

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 924 Narrated byAbdullah ibn Mas'ud
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There is a mobile (squads) of Angels on Earth convey to me the blessings invoked upon me by my Ummah.
Transmitted by Nasa'i and Darimi

Sunan of Abu-DawoodHadith 1525 Narrated byAbuHurayrah
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone invokes blessings on me once, Allah will bless him ten times.

33: 56 Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! send ye blessings on him and salute him with all respect.

And when a person is near Prophet Muhammad ‘s [salla lahu alaihi wa salaam] grave then he or she can use “ya” or “o” to address or send salaam on him.

Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): Details of Commencing Prayer Dawud :: Book 3 : Hadith 1042 Narrated Aws ibn Aws:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Among the most excellent of your days is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he died, on it the last trumpet will be blown, and on it the shout will be made, so invoke more blessings on me that day, for your blessings will be submitted to me. The people asked: Apostle of Allah, how can it be that our blessings will be submitted to you while your body is decayed? He replied: Allah, the Exalted, has prohibited the earth from consuming the bodies of Prophets.

*Note: Blessings will be submitted to Rasool Allah salla lahu alaihi wa sallam is itself the proof that he does not hears directly from any part of the world, and angels convey the blessing and salaam.Where as he can hear near his grave.

Ibn-e-Kathir on An-Nisa 4:64

Ibn-e-Kathir’s Tafsir

And He (i.e. Allah) says: (" ولو أنهم إذ ظلموا أنفسهم ") “If they, when they were unjust to themselves” . In this verse Allah instructs the sinners and wrong-doers that when they commit a mistake or a sin, they should come to the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیھ وسلم) and then seek Allah’s forgiveness near Him (صلی اللہ علیھ وسلم), and ask Him (صلی اللہ علیھ وسلم) to seek forgiveness for them (i.e for the sinners). Verily when they would do this act, then Allah would accept their Toba and would confer His blessings on them, and would forgive them.

And for this reason He (Allah) has said: (" لوجدوا الله توابا رحيما ") “Indeed, they would have found Allah All-Forgiving, Most Merciful” And verily a group of scholars (i.e. many scholars) have narrated the (المشهورة) famous account and from them Ash-Sheikh Abu Mansoor As-Sabagh has narrated it in his book [“Ash-Shamil”. In it Hazrat Utba (RA) said: I was sitting near the grave of the Prophet (SAW) when an Arabi came and said: (السلام عليك يا رسول الله) “Salam Be on You, the Prophet of Allah” , I have heard that Allah has said (in Quran) “If they, when they were unjust to themselves, had come to you and begged Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had begged forgiveness for them, indeed, they would have found Allah All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” And verily I have come seeking forgiveness for my sin and seeking your shifaat (recommendation) towards Allah.

then he started (reciting the following verses of poem):

يا خير من دفنت بالقاع أعظمه
فطاب من طيبهن القاع والأكم
نفسي الفداء لقبر أنت ساكنه
فيه العفاف وفيه الجود والكرم

O the one who is the best among all the buried ones, (resting) on the greatest bed (And) who is more pleasant than the pleasantest things resting in hidden
May myself be sacrificed on this grave where you live! In it (i.e. in this grave) is the forgiveness and in it is the generosity and honor
Then the Arabi went away. Then my eyes became burdened (because of sleep) and I saw the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیھ وسلم) in my dream saying: (يا عتبي الحق الأعرابي فبشره أن الله قد غفر له) “O Utba (RA), catch that Arabi and deliver him the news that Allah has verily forgiven him.”

*Note:1Calling (السلام عليك يا رسول الله) “Salam Be on You, the Prophet of Allah” is permissible after the death of the Prophet (Salla lahu alaihi wa sallam]
2.Addressing the Prophet (Salla lahu alahi wa sallam) after his death is allowed near his grave as he is hears near his grave
3 It is permissible to directly address the Prophet (SAW) by using the word (يا) “Ya” , meaning “O” near his grave as he is hearing
4. It is permissible to say that: “In it (i.e. in this grave) is the forgiveness and in it is the generosity and honor”.because Rasool Allah salla lahu alaihi wa sallam is in the grave and he will intercede and pray for the forgiveness to Allah subhanawatala.

Prophet Muhammad[salla lahu alaihi wa salaam] and Inspiration
Fighting for the Cause of Allah (Jihaad) Bukhari :: Book 4 :: Volume 52 :: Hadith 55 Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet delivered a sermon and said, "Zaid took the flag and was martyred, and then Ja'far took the flag and was martyred, and then
'Abdullah bin Rawaha took the flag and was martyred too, and then Khalid bin Al-Walid took the flag though he was not appointed as a
commander and Allah made him victorious." The Prophet further added, "It would not please us to have them with us." Aiyub, a sub-narrator,
added, "Or the Prophet, shedding tears, said, 'It would not p ease them to be with us."

*Note:Prophet Muhammad [salla lahu alaihi wa salaam] got the inspiration about the happenings in that battle.

Eclipses Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 18 :: Hadith 161 Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abbas:
The sun eclipsed in the life-time of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) . Allah's Apostle offered the eclipse prayer and stood for a long period equal to the period in which one could recite Surat-al-Baqara. Then he bowed for a long time and then stood up for a long period which was shorter than that of the first standing, then bowed again for a long time but for a shorter period than the first; then he prostrated twice and then stood up for a long period which was shorter than that of the first standing; then he bowed for a long time which was shorter than the previous one, and then he raised his head and stood up for a long period which was shorter than the first standing, then he bowed for a long time which was shorter than the first bowing, and then prostrated (twice) and finished the prayer. By then, the sun (eclipse) had cleared. The Prophet then said, "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They eclipse neither because of the death of somebody nor because of his life (i.e. birth). So when you see them, remember Allah." The people say, "O Allah's Apostle! We saw you taking something from your place and then we saw you retreating." The Prophet replied, "I saw Paradise and stretched my hands towards a bunch (of its fruits) and had I taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains. I also saw the Hell-fire and I had never seen such a horrible sight. I saw that most of the inhabitants were women." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! Why is it so?" The Prophet replied, "Because of their ungratefulness." It was asked whether they are ungrateful to Allah. The Prophet said, "They are ungrateful to their companions of life (husbands) and ungrateful to good deeds. If you are benevolent to one of them throughout the life and if she sees anything (undesirable) in you, she will say, 'I have never had any good from you.' "

Umar [May Allah be pleased with him] And Inspiration

Companions of the Prophet Bukhari :: Book 5 :: Volume 57 :: Hadith 38 Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "Among the nations before you there used to be people who were inspired (though they were not prophets). And if there is any of such a persons amongst my followers, it is 'Umar."
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Among the nation of Bani Israel who lived before you, there were men who used to be inspired with guidance though they were not prophets, and if there is any of such persons amongst my followers, it is 'Umar."

Umar’s r.a voice was directly heard by Sariya
‘Umar Faruq was delivering the Friday sermon from the pulpit at Medina. On account of his spiritual concentration, the battle scenario was right
before his eyes. During the sermon, he proclaimed loudly:O Sariyah! Go behind the mountain!
After saying this, he resumed delivering the sermon. He was performing two acts simultaneously: he was delivering the Friday sermon at the Prophet’s Mosque, and at the same time he was directly issuing instructions to his commander at the battlefield.

Abu Nu‘aym narrated it in Dala’il-un-nubuwwah (p.507); Khatib Tabrizi, Mishkat-ul-masabih, b. of fada’il (virtues) ch.8 (3:318#5954); Ibn ‘Asakir in
Tahdhib tarikh Dimashq al-kabir generally known as Tarikh/Tahdhib Ibn ‘Asakir; Ibn Kathir in al-Bidayah wan-nihayah (5:210-1) and declared its
chain of authorities as excellent and fair (jayyid hasan); ‘Asqalani graded its chain of transmission hasan (fair) in al-Isabah fi tamyiz-is-sahabah
(2:3); ‘Ali al-Hindi, Kanz-ul-‘ummal (12:571,572,573 #35788-91); ‘Ajlawni, Kashf-ul-khifa’ wa muzil-ul-ilbas (2:514#3172); and Albani in
Silsilat-ul-ahadith-is-sahihah (#1110).

Saying ya or “o” on judgement day
Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 2.485 Narrated byAbu Huraira
The Prophet said, "(On the Day of Resurrection) camels will come to their owner in the best state of health they have ever had (in the world), and if he had not paid their Zakat (in the world) then they would tread him with their feet; and similarly, sheep will come to their owner in the best state of health they have ever had in the world, and if he had not paid their Zakat, then they would tread him with their hooves and would butt him with their horns." The Prophet added, "One of their rights is that they should be milked while water is kept in front of them." The Prophet added, "I do not want anyone of you to come to me on the Day of Resurrection, carrying over his neck a sheep that will be bleating. Such a person will (then) say, 'O Muhammad! (please intercede for me.)' I will say to him. 'I can't help you, for I conveyed Allah's Message to you.' Similarly, I do not want anyone of you to come to me carrying over his neck a camel that will be grunting. Such a person (then) will say 'O Muhammad! (please intercede for me).' I will say to him, 'I can't help you for I conveyed Allah's message to you.' "
